The new version Linux Mint 18.1 is available in two editions (Cinnamon and MATE), in 32-bit and 64-bit builds. The major components of Mint 18.1 are Cinnamon 3.2, MDM 2.0, Linux kernel 4.4, and Ubuntu 16.04 package base. It offers Cinnamon users a new screensaver that displays more information and provides media controls even when the screen is locked. On computers which feature accelerometers, the Cinnamon desktop can now rotate when the device's orientation changes. Both editions offer upgrades to the X-apps programs with the Xplayer media player now offering the ability to blank screens not being used to display video. Also, the update manager can display a list of available kernel versions with recommendations.
